Identity fraud

Your identity is a valuable commodity - and this commodity can be stolen and used in a variety of ways. With just a few of your personal details, a fraudster can buy goods and services in your name. What you can do to protect yourself from fraud

Here are a few simple precautions that you can take to ensure you don’t become a victim of fraud:

• be alert when using your cheque or credit card; keep your plastic cards and account information safe at all times
• don't send money in response to unsolicited letters or phone calls
• dispose of any documents bearing your name and address and any other personal details carefully

What to do if you are a victim of plastic card, online banking or cheque fraud

From April 1st 2007 changes to the reporting of plastic card, online banking and cheque fraud were introduced by the Home Office, following discussion with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and the financial sector.  Account holders should report these types of fraud directly to the financial institution concerned. They will then be responsible for undertaking further verification and investigation, and, as appropriate, reporting cases of criminal activity directly to the police where they will be recorded and subsequent investigation considered. (It should be noted that this process is applicable to England, Wales and Northern Ireland only).  These changes will reduce the level of bureaucracy involved in fraud recording, and streamline the reporting and initial investigation of such frauds.
